How to Stay MERRY During the Holidays!

"We wish you a Merry Christmas, we wish you a Merry Christmas, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a..."

Yep, depending on how that day went you're probably exhausted by the "Happy" New Year. Believe it or not as happy as the holidays look on TV, for some people this can be a very trying time of year. After doing some research on mental health during the holidays, I decided to share 7 tips to keep you as holly, jolly, and merry as the chubby guy that brought you gifts last year!

7. If you hate the holidays, just say it. Look, I know no one wants to be referred to as the Grinch that stole Christmas, but better out than in. If you've lost someone, had a bad break up, horrible year financially, it's okay to admit that you're just not excited for this year's Christmas carolers ringing your door bell.

6. Don't race against father time. Maybe this is your year to host or you've signed up for way too many secret Santa parties. Don't cram, plan. Make a to-do list of everything you need during the holidays. Some good ones would be food, wrapping paper, patience, and possibly a stiff adult beverage.

5. Don't rob your penny bank. I tell this to myself every week and well... ehh. But this one's for all of us! Put a number down and stick to it! You wouldn't believe how much stress we bring on ourselves trying to avoid empty pockets and broken promises.

4. Crack open your arts and crafts. Get creative! It's the season of giving and if your budget doesn't permit then maybe a homemade gift will do. Decorate picture frames, candle holders, etc. If you're going to see your parents, they're probably just grateful you're home safe with no forehead tattoos.

3. Say no to sweets. Not literally, I mean clearly this website is covered with them! But don't completely abandon your diet for the sake of holiday cheer. Trust me, it's way harder to work off come January 1st.

2. Run and hide. Again not literally, but break away from all the craziness. During the holidays it's best to schedule yourself some me time. This may be before all of the family arrives or after tug of war for the last box of vanilla. Either way it's SO necessary. This is also when that adult beverage I told you to pick up comes in. Take some time to focus on you, to rest, to reflect and honestly, just to say thank you. You're here, hopefully as healthy as can be, and you've made it to everyone's favorite time of the year!

1. SMILE. Don't question me on this one, just do it. You'll thank me later.

Happy Holidays!
